- important aspects to assist in raising their profile;
- strategies for getting credit for getting the job done; and
- ways to market themselves more effectively in their own organisation and elsewhere.
Exercises included highlighting common issues such as not having
the confidence to actively contribute in meetings, struggling to
communicate previous achievements in interviews and not feeling
valued or understood by managers or colleagues. The risks of not
resolving these issues were identified through group work and
positive strategies to overcome them were discussed.
Key methods for marketing yourself effectively were identified
during this session, and these included:
- Positive communication to be proactive and request regular time
with your line manager to discuss any issues that you may need help
resolving, put yourself forward for new projects rather than
waiting to be asked, recognise your own contribution to a project
and take ownership when feeding back to the team.
- Preparation marketing yourself with confidence is helped
considerably by good preparation. Always identify what you want to
communicate prior to a meeting or interview. Consider classes such
as vocal training to boost your confidence in addressing multiple
people. Role play with friends or trusted colleagues when preparing
for an interview and always keep a log of your achievement for the
future.
- Challenging ones own comfort zones it is important to challenge yourself in order to have the confidence to market yourself in situation that are perhaps less comfortable for you. Try to tackle this by joining a network group in order to become accustomed to presenting yourself to a variety of different people.
The session was very productive with members providing much positive feedback. If you would like to download a copy of the presentation slides provided by Equality Works and notes for this session please click on the links below.
