Page Title Schools Roundtable

20/01/2009

On March 6, WTS held a very successful Schools and Colleges Roundtable event attended by more than 20 individuals representing schools, industry, the university sector and specialist careers advisors as well as voluntary sector organisations. Speaker included Jill Tuffee, Deputy Headteacher from Mulberry Girls School in Tower Hamlets and Latifa Begum a former pupil of the school. Latifa reported back to the group on a survey conducted among pupils which highlighted a lack of knowledge about transport as a career. "Many girls thought being in transport meant you were either a driver, ticket collector or cleaner" she said.

The group heard from speakers about the need to change perceptions of the transport industry and "sell" careers more effectively to girls and young women. They also heard about new initiatives, including the London Engineering Project currently being promoted by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the work of Go Skills (one of the sector skills councils for transport).

The event was hosted by WTS sponsor, Atkins at their Euston Tower offices. Jane Farrell, WTS Board member, who leads the schools agenda praised the enthusiasm and knowledge of the participants: "We will be using the results of today's event to form an Action Plan for WTS engagement with schools and colleges."
